Elderberry syrup, she’s made quite the splash over the last few years and truly is a tried and true formula with every herbalist having their own version, so here is mine honoring the spirit of the great elder tree known as Hyldemoer in Scandinavian folklore.

Folk tradition strictly dictated that you must never cut elder wood without asking her permission first. Woodcutters would kneel and recite a traditionally rhyme to give the spirit time to leve the branches if the person cut without permission hyldemoer was said to haunt their home. (If you’re into Harry Potter think of the elder wand)

The translated version of the rhyme is “elder mother, elder mother give me some of thy wood, and i will give you some of mine, when i grow into a tree.” In many traditions an offering of milk and honey was left by the roots. You had to wait in absolute silence after reciting the rhyme. If the wind did not rustle and the tree remained still it was understood that hyldemoer has granted permission. Beloved children’s author Hans Christen Anderson even wrote a book about this folklore titled nabosbornene or little elder tree mother.

Elderberries are known for boosting the immune system and having inflammation modulating properties as well as are full of antioxidants, and vitamins and minerals. Cinnamon contains antioxidants, is antibacterial, warming, boosts bone health, can help to regulate insulin, and helps calm the stomach and regulate digestion. Ginger most of us know and love for an upset stomach but she’s also antibacterial and improves circulation. Astragalus is a lovely early onset and preventative herb that also promotes tissue regeneration and reduces severity of lung infections. Orange peel is great for those phlegmy mornings and coughs, and contains vitamin c just like rose hips who are also full of antioxidants and can help with stomach upset! They’re great for the heart too! Licorice root is a common harmonizer and balancer in TCM formulas, and also moistening and adds a little sweetness. Elderflower helps fight off sickness and keep fevers at bay, tulsi is great for the lungs, lemon balm is uplifting and one of the few antiviral herbs. Goldenrod is wonderful for allergy symptoms, calendula helps get the lymph moving which is really important in fighting off infections. Of course we’ve got our mushrooms which build up our immune system and help us fight off sickness.

While many take elderberry syrup preventively I like it best at those first signs or early onset of a cold, I packed this syrup with herbs to kick those nasty bugs, as well as some allergy and lung herbs to help with all the common cold symptoms.

This syrup is all about the heart. Energetically, physically emotionally supporting our heart. Red herbs often lend to cardiovascular benefit and so this syrup really packs a gentle punch, tending to our heart space. This syrup is made with all of my favorite herbs for the heart whether they help you process and release grief, open your heart, love yourself a little more, or help you uphold strong boundaries it’s a lovely blend. Hawthorn Berry has been an important preventative herb on my journey after my brother, mum, and dad all had hospitalized heart issues in one summer I’ve leaned on this syrup to strengthen my heart, keep the blood flowing, and help me feel empowered in my own health journey. It’s also really good in coffee, cacao, or matcha, but just as delicious on its own!

Oh and did I mention because it helps oxygenate your blood this little syrup can help with elevation sickness, and its lovely in a ginger tea for the moon cycle.
